Athletic Injuries

It’s not just professional athletes that sustain injuries while playing the sport they love. Weekend warriors, amateur athletes, and those living active lives also run the risk of getting injured. Most of the time, with a proper warm up, awareness to form and appropriate equipment, athletes of all ages are able to play safely. Yet, injuries can happen when you least expect it due to an accident or even an underlying condition that may necessitate treatment.

Most often, excessive training, inappropriate training methods, or technique flaws can be a cause of injury, but structural abnormalities and muscle imbalances/weakness can also be significant factors leading to injury.

The musculoskeletal system is structurally responsible for movement of the body. As spine, muscle and nervous system experts, with core interest in movement and function, chiropractors play an important role in helping recreational and competitive athletes to manage and prevent injuries and enhance sport performance. Chiropractors assess, diagnose and treat acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions commonly affecting athletes and also play an important role in preventative care and rehabilitation.

The type of care provided is dependent on the type and mechanism of injury and may include chiropractic adjustments, mobilizations, soft tissue therapies, modalities, kinesiotaping, rehabilitation exercises, and lifestyle advice. The goal of treatment is to reduce pain, restore proper function and movement patterns, enhance healing of damaged tissue, and prevent recurrence of injury. Chiropractors can also help to determine the best strategy for return to play.

  • The most common athletic injuries we treat include:
  • Low back pain
  • Hip pain
  • Neck pain
  • Concussions
  • Sprains and strains
  • Knee injuries
  • Shin Splints
  • Plantar fasciitis / heel pain
  • Rotator cuff injuries
  • Elbow pain

Kinesiotaping

Kinesiotaping alleviates discomfort and facilitates lymphatic drainage by microscopically lifting the skin. This lifting effect forms convolutions in the skin, reducing pressure while enabling a more effective flow of lymphatic fluid. This helps to improves circulation and decrease inflammation in the target area.

After a thorough evaluation, kinesiotape is specifically applied to the patient based on the clinical findings. These findings dictate the application in terms of the direction and amount of stretch placed on the tape. Kinesiotape has many different applications and has the ability to re-educate the neuromuscular system, reduce inflammation, prevent injury and enhance circulation and healing.

Exercise/Rehabilitation

In addition to chiropractic adjustments and other treatments performed in-office, we also educate our patients on specific stretches, postural exercises and rehabilitation exercises that can be done at home between visits. We will also review any current exercises you may be doing that might need to be altered during the healing process.

Exercise and movement are not only key components to injury recovery but are also important in the strengthening and stabilizing of the injured area to prevent recurrences. Adding specific home exercises to your treatment plan ultimately leads to better long lasting results, faster improvement, and higher patient satisfaction.

Pregnancy & Post-Natal Care

Chiropractic care is a natural, drug-free, safe, non-invasive treatment approach that addresses many health issues that can affect expectant moms.  Your chiropractor will use specific, individualized techniques to help release areas of spinal tension that can contribute to back pain, hip pain, leg pain, swelling and other issues that can commonly arise during pregnancy.

Chiropractic care is a safe and comfortable treatment option during all stages of pregnancy. During the first trimester, adjustments can help balance your spine and pelvis prior to the increase in weight gain to prevent prenatal back pain as well as help you adapt to all the changes such as fatigue, nausea and headaches. In the second trimester, proper alignment continues to assist in the stability of your spine so that you can stay active, sleep well and handle ergonomic strain. As you move through the third trimester, specific techniques help with common occurrences such as sciatica, rib pain, ligament tension, tailbone strain, plantar fasciitis and carpal tunnel syndrome.

Post-natal care will help you recover from your pregnancy and birth so that you can focus on the health and well-being of your new baby. It is best to have a chiropractic adjustment within the first few weeks to help achieve postural and structural balance as ligaments tighten and your body changes. Chiropractic care will continue to help with commonly seen issues such as neck and upper back pain, headaches, fatigue, stress and wrist tendonitis. Techniques will be modified to accommodate your body whether you are recovering from a vaginal birth or assisted birth. Your chiropractor can also help you with specific post-natal exercises and give helpful advice on the proper ergonomics of nursing and carrying your newborn.

Pediatric Care

Having a chiropractic newborn assessment within the first few weeks following birth can help support the health of your new baby. The unavoidable stresses of pregnancy and birth may contribute to the following:

  • baby looks and/or keeps his/her head more to one side
  • flattening of head
  • inconsolable periods of crying
  • colic and gas
  • gastric reflux/uncomfortable spitting up
  • struggles to move bowels
  • sleep difficulties
  • hip joints click

If your baby has any of these issues, chiropractic care can help. A newborn check-up will also help to support your baby through his or her growth and developmental milestones. Pediatric chiropractic care gently and safely removes spinal tension to allow your baby’s body to function optimally.

Your baby goes through incredible physical and neurological changes especially during their first year of life. For optimal growth and development, periodic chiropractic check-ups for your child is recommended. Removing spinal tension will help with specific issues such as nursing difficulties and colic and may also help prevent future health problems. Many parents remark on how healthy their children are when they are under chiropractic care. Just like us, children cannot avoid certain stresses that may cause spinal tension or alignment issues whether it’s from sleeping position, device use, backpack strain, running, jumping, falling – just being kids! Treatments are always accommodated to be comfortable for your child. Infants and children love their adjustments and often respond to care faster than adults because they don’t have years of underlying spinal strain and stress overcome. Chiropractic care is a safe, natural treatment option for the entire family.
